This ecumenical faith trail, developed through the generous support of the Cumbria Trust for Churches, encourages visitors to explore twelve varied and fascinating places of worship linked by the story of the nearby railways, including the famous Settle-Carlisle and Eden Valley lines.
The navvies who built the railways in the nineteenth century lived a dangerous life in squalid conditions, where drunkenness and violence were common.
The Methodist missions sought to bring sobriety and thus a little financial security, as well as spiritual support. Today the chapels along this trail are open for visitors to enjoy and to continue to offer space for reflection and refreshment.
