John Wesley visited Osmotherley 18 times, initially at the invitation of a Roman Catholic Franciscan friar in 1745. He stayed and preached at the Old Hall (now a Benedictine monastery, open daily to visitors), as well as preaching in the parish church, outdoors in the village and later in the chapel, which was built in 1754.
It was used as a schoolroom during the 19th century when the village grew and larger church premises were needed. The larger building is now a private house. The original chapel has been restored and today Osmotherley is part of an ecumenical parish.
