John Wesley preached in the open air here on many occasions; the horse block on which he stood is now at Wesley Centre, Wednesbury.
A plaque commemorates Wesley's 33 visits 1743-1790. Methodists were subject to persecution, looting and riots in this area 1743-45, which included in October 1743 a mob hounding John Wesley himself.
